The analysis of technical data on renewables gives indicates that the most applicable renewable resources for Fiji would be hydropower, solar energy (photovoltaic and thermal), bioenergy, energy from wind, energy from the ocean, energy from tides and geothermal energy.
With the increasing role of the PV system in power generation, a local company Fiji Renewables Pte Limited (FRL) is formed which will be a subsidiary company owned by EFL to look after the Fiji Energy sector on renewables. The introduction of a new renewable energy generation system will improve macroeconomic stability.
The provision of energy in Fiji is provided through electrical power grids consisting of microgrids installed in Government facilities and community-run in rural areas. Furthermore, diesel generators and solar home systems also are utilized as a way of power providers.
As a developing nation with its increasing energy demands, Fiji is in the process of introducing renewables to generate green power to minimize its reliance on fossil fuels and to minimize greenhouse emissions. The paper focuses on green power generation with the available renewables.
Smart microgrids are defined as scalable and autonomous energy systems that can operate independently or in coordination with the main grid, integrating seamlessly into larger energy networks to enhance reliability and adaptability while providing resilience against disasters and fluctuations in energy demand. How useful is this definition?
Looking ahead, the future of microgrid development holds significant promise, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and smart grid technologies.
Communication technology will play an important role in improving the power quality issues of smart microgrids. Previously, most of these devices were trying to become dependent on communication that will have some drawbacks such as uncertainty of data and latency.
Microgrid fulfills the requirement of Smart Grid Initiative Policy (GIP) . Microgrid also enables active customer participation by giving accessibility of real time information and control to the customer [8,9].
The market for photovoltaic (PV) systems has long been dominated by silicon solar cells because of their high efficiency and remarkable stability, which have been achieved through consistent research and development in the technology.
Silicon is positioned as the leading technology in the PV market due to this factor. It has been shown that after 25 years, silicon photovoltaic cells can retain more than 80 % of their original power conversion efficiency , meeting the standard stability tests for PV technologies.
Another intrinsic property of photovoltaic solar cell materials that significantly affects efficiency is the bandgap. Silicon cells are limited by their bandgap, which restricts their responsiveness to the broad spectrum of solar energy. This limitation also results in excess thermal energy from non-useable photons, impacting overall performance.
